Barriers to blogging:

Identifying the barriers that can be addressed:

Unwelcome comments can be filtered, safeguards that can be put in place, moderation after posting.
Staff training - you need buy in. Getting staff familiar with blogging.
Branding or professional look and feel of the site
Financial implications - these are minimum due to free, open source software. Ways to pay for services may be difficult.
Does it draw users away from corporate website
Archiving?
Time that could be spent doing this or other things?
Quality assuance
Ensuring input from other parties, getting comments started and underway
Getting people to become blog users
Security issues and copyright (including inadvertantly revealing business secrets)
Technical issues
Justifying the need for a blog, making a business case
Ethics - the rules of a company, ethical blogging
How much is too much on a blog, using your time.
How to choose the content to put on a blog?
Measuring the response
Teaching people how to use the information contained in a blog
Facilitating a function that tradionally belongs to Human Capital Development dept. Getting trust from key departments ie. resourcing
Radical trust

Barriers that can't be addressed as easily:

Staff inertia - not interested in engaging in the technology, don't want to change.
Unreasonable expectations in demonstrating success or need for new service - where's the evidence? 'Let's wait and see' what others do.
Cultural issues "Serial mistake culture" - don't want to expose themselves to criticism or making mistakes in public
Regulation
Return on investment
Security, especially on an intranet - will you be revealing your business interests?
"It has to be password protected"
Organisation wanting to map existing protocols and practices onto the blog
Continuity of this project, making it sustainable, this is what the company wants.

Workshop Exercise 1: Establishing a Blog for your Library

Group 1. Eskson, Franchesca, Christine

Areas of usage and benefits:

Trip report for a distributed library organisation. Inconvience for library group to meet, sharing on a blog is easier.. Green agenda - saving of travel costs.
Providing access to other resources, sharing ideas and results.
Mentoring environment using a blog, blogs for trainees to get their thoughts down, allowing people to get their thoughts down. Easier to look at a time and place of your choosing.
Blog as a centralised resource pulling information together.
Simple in your blog style.

Group 2. Eddie, Bettie, Cor
Areas of usage:

Sharing within your own library. General knowledge sharing with the employees in your organisation. Creating teams to discuss topics. A way to compliment existing alerting mechanisms.
Blogging champions within an organisation.

Benefits:

Innovation for corporate librarians is very important, especially if it is part of the organisation's mission. Makes the innovation global, especially for multi-national companies.
Publicity for library, promoting the departments of the information profession.
A good way to interact with your users.

Group 3. Pernille, Sharon
Areas of usage and benefits:

Question and Answer services provided on blogs, leaving the user community to provide the answers.
Resource-building, building a knowledge base built on previously asked questions.
Lots of experts out there who can contribute content to your organisation, and this can be done using external freely available resources.
Gathering feedback, requirements for consultancy satisfied by using comments function.

Became re-invigorated with blogs.
Have Facebook acount.
Working with blogs over the last 12 months (Wordpress). Use blogs to deliver Web sites, as blog software has additional benefits (e.g. engaging with user base).
Am enthusiastic, but there are resource issues. May need to keep feet on ground. Some things aren't as successful as hoped.
Cor D. and BettieW. IRC, Netherlands. Users of blogs, but not author. Responsible for library and database - but we feel it could be used better.

Sharon Mehle, Israel. Works for multinational company. H\ve probelms of copyright. Make use ofg external blogs. Issues of IPR with blogs.

Pernill Helholm. Medical company in Copenhagen. Corporate librarian. Also studying in library school. Looking at use of blogs in R:@D department. But there are security issues.
